What is a Public Adjuster?
A public adjuster is an independent insurance professional who works on behalf of a policyholder to help settle an insurance claim. They are also known as claims adjusters or public insurance adjusters.
Public adjusters can help with a variety of tasks, including:
-
Property inspections: Conducting inspections of the property to assess damage and determine the scope of repairs
-
Negotiations: Negotiating with the insurance company to get a fair settlement
-
Communication: Handling all communications with the insurance company, including meetings, emails, phone calls, and paper documents
-
Advice: Advising the policyholder on what to do to fix their property
Public adjusters are different from insurance company adjusters, who are provided at no cost to the policyholder. Public adjusters charge a fee, usually a percentage of the insurance settlement, for their services.
Policyholders may want to hire a public adjuster if:
-
Their claim is large or complex
-
They don't have time to complete all the documentation on their own
-
They are unhappy with the insurance company's initial settlement offer
